In checking for breaks, bends, faulty connectors and other causes of signal loss, one makes use of a fiber optics fault tester. This may be used for both single mode and multimode cables.

In finding the right fiber optics fault tester, considerations should be made on: a.) Wavelength, b.) Power output and c.) Distance range. The three standard wavelengths are 635 n, 650nm, and 670 nm. The power output here is the optical power output of the fault tester. The distance range is the maximum length of wire the fiber optics fault tester is effective and useful for.
